5 Useful Kindle Paperwhite tips

by Peter Ong on 01 May

I bought a Kindle Paperwhite recently and as usual with any new gadget, I wanted to make full use of it. After going through the manual and scouring the web for tips, here's 5 of my favourites.

  1. Get Calibre

Calibre is free & open source e-book library management tool. Not only can Calibre help manage your ebook library, it can convert other ebooks format like epub to Kindle friendly, .mobi before it sends it into your Kindle. With plugins, you can remove DRM, create collections automatically, and more... This is just a few of the many things it can do. Go download it now!

  2. Change Kindle's Send to Kindle email address

Amazon gives you a random number behind your name when you register. Make your Kindle email address more personal by changing it on Amazon's website after you log in. It's under Personal Documents Settings > Send-to-Kindle E-Mail Settings.

  3. Quick Bookmarking

Okay, there are still some of you who click the top menu bar, then on the menu to access the Add Bookmarks, just to make a bookmark. A easy and faster way is tapping on the top right corner. A dog ear just like doing this on a book appears. So much easier.

  4. Instapaper to Kindle

Instapaper is a great tool to save web pages for reading later, especially long ones. Why not read the longer articles on your Kindle instead?

Under Account, there is a Manage your my Kindle Settings. Follow the instructions to add the Approved Personal Document E-mail List and your Kindle email address. Set the time to send and you're done. I set mine just before I leave my home. Got a lot reading done this way.

Additional tip: Swipe up or down for next/previous article, usual left, right taps for flipping pages.

  5. Change your dictionary

I didn't like the installed dictionary as the explanation wasn't kid friendly. So I managed to grab another dictionary and via USB, you just need to transfer it to the dictionary folder located in the documents folder.
